This week, a refugee mother-to-be came to us feeling nervous and overwhelmed.
She is preparing to give birth in a new country, far from familiar systems and far from family support, unsure if she had what she needed to care for her baby.
When she arrived, you could feel the weight she was carrying.
When she left, she had a car seat, a safe place for her baby to sleep, and the basic essentials she needed to begin this new chapter.
But more importantly, she left with something less visible and even more important: confidence.
Confidence in her ability to care for her newborn.
Confidence in navigating this new season of life.
Confidence that she is not alone.
This is what we do at Utah Refugee Connection.

Women and Children Are at the Heart of Every Community
At Utah Refugee Connection, we believe that when mothers are supported, families become stronger. And when families are strong, entire communities thrive.
Refugee mothers in Utah carry incredible resilience. They are rebuilding their lives while caring for young children, often navigating new systems with limited resources. Our role is to walk alongside them by providing not just essential items, but opportunities for connection, confidence, and growth.
Creating Spaces for Connection and Confidence
Throughout the year, we create spaces where women feel safe, seen, and supported through events like International Women’s Day and our Mother’s Day celebration.
These events honor women as leaders while connecting them to mentors, friendships, and community support.
We do not just serve women. We honor and elevate them.
Meeting Essential Needs With Dignity
We also recognize that confidence grows more easily when basic needs are met.
Through our Maternal Health Program, we provide critical items that help mothers care for their children safely and confidently, including:
- Car seats, along with hands-on training from a certified car seat technician
- Strollers that allow mothers to access appointments and move through their day
- Pack n Plays that give babies a safe place to sleep
These may seem like simple things, but for a mother navigating life in a new country, they provide stability, safety, and peace of mind.
Supporting Mothers as Their Child’s First Teacher
One of the most powerful ways to support a family is to support a mother in her role as her child’s first and most important teacher.
That is why we created developmental kits designed for key early childhood stages:
- Infants (0–1 years)
- Toddlers (2–3 years)
- Preschool-aged children (4–5 years)
Each kit includes thoughtfully selected books, toys, and activities that promote early learning, language development, and connection.
What makes these kits especially meaningful is how they are shared.
We do not simply hand them out. We sit with mothers and model how to use them. We show how something as simple as reading a book, stacking blocks, or playing together can build a child’s brain and strengthen connection within the family.
Sometimes those moments extend beyond the room.
We have had fathers join by FaceTime, watching, learning, and asking questions about how they can play a stronger role in their child’s development. It becomes a shared experience that strengthens not just the child’s growth, but the entire family.
In these moments, something powerful happens.
Mothers begin to see what they are capable of.
Fathers feel invited into the learning.
Families grow stronger together.
And children benefit from that connection every single day.
Walking Alongside Mothers
Everything we do is rooted in relationship.
We are not here to step in. We are here to walk alongside.
To remind mothers that they are capable.
To create opportunities for connection.
To provide resources that make daily life more manageable.
And to invest in the next generation by supporting the earliest years of a child’s life.
Because when a mother feels empowered, everything changes.

How You Can Help
In the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, we are working to raise $25,000 to continue this work.
Your gift can make a direct and meaningful impact:
- $100 can provide a car seat, ensuring a child’s safety and a mother’s peace of mind
- $50 can support a developmental kit with books and learning tools
- $25 can provide diapers and essential items that ease daily burdens
Your donation is more than a gift.
It is a way to help a fellow mother, like the one who walked through our doors this week, and say:
You are safe. You are seen. We are here to support you.

Together, we can ensure that refugee mothers in our community have the support, resources, and confidence they need to help their children and families thrive.
